 Primary and secondary data.

        Statistics can be classified as primary data and secondary data. The ‘Primary data’ refers to that data which the investigator produces himself for the purpose of enquiry in hand. For example, if it is desired to conduct an enquiry about the wages of workers in a certain mill in Mumbay and data pertaining to this enquiry are collected by the investigator from the workers, then such data would be termed as primary data.

The term secondary data, on the other hand, refers to statistical data which do not originate from the investigator himself but is obtained from someone else’s records. Thus, if instead of obtaining data from the workers, investigator gets the data from records of the mill or trade union office then data will be termed as secondary data. In other words, when primary data are utilised for any other purpose or for the same purpose at some subsequent enquiry, it is termed as secondary data.

 Merits of primary data;

1.High degree of accuracy.

2.1t does not require extra caution regarding suitability, adequacy and reliability.

3.A primary data shows data in greater detail.

4. The primary source frequently includes definitions of various terms are units used there in.

5. For some investigators, secondary data are not available at all.

Demerits of primary data.

1.Collection of primary data requires a lot of time .        2.Collection of primary data requires a lot of funds .

3.Collection of primary data requires a lot of labour and time.

4. Collection of primary data requires high degree of skill.

5. In some enquiries it is not possible to collect primary data.

Merits of secondary data;

1. Use of secondary data saves funds.

2. Use of secondary data saves time and labour .

 3. It is convenient to use secondary data.

4. In some enquiries, primary data cannot be collected. .

Demerits of secondary data;

1.Degree of accuracy is not high as compared to that of      primary data.

2.we have to be extra cautions while using secondary data. 3.secondary are not available for all types of enquries.

4. It is not easy to find secondary data which exactly fit the need of the present  investigation.

5. It is not easy to find secondary data which are sufficiently accurate.

6. We have to be extra cautious while using secondary data.

7. Secondary data are not available for all types of enquiries.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DATA

1. Primary data are very much original. The investigator himself collects the figures, On the other hand, secondary data are not original. Someone collects the data and someone else uses it.

2. In the collection of primary data more capital is required, more labour is required because they are very much original. Secondary data are already collected data.

3. Primary data are collected according to the wishes of the researcher but the aim is different while collecting secondary data.

4. Primary data are more suitable to the purpose of enquiry in hand. Secondary data are less suitable to the purpose of energy in hand as these are collected for some other purpose of some other enquiry.

5. Use of primary data does not require much caution. Use of secondary data requires a lot of caution.

6. Primary data are collected from statistical units. Secondary data are not collected from statistical units but from different publications or from different agencies or from different researchers.

7. There is the possibility of personal prejudices in the collection of primary data but this is not possible in secondary data.

8. The information obtained through the collection of primary data is likely to be more accurate than that of  secondary data.

Examples of secondary data include:
